2001
Our 1st practise saw around 40 girls turn up. Only about 20% of these had danced before and although these numbers have gone up and down over the years, some of those original girls are still dancing.
That 1 st year was really hard work but the girls were really enthusiastic. We managed dinky, tiny and junior lines and in Aug and September of that year we did one dance with TMDA and one with GMMDA.
The TMDA comp had mixed results. The dinkies managed a very respectable 2 nd place with best leader on the day. The tinies however had a disaster. They broke out the wrong way, forgetting their moves and losing step. They came 13 points behind 3 rd place. The juniors didn’t fare very well either.
I had spent several evenings making ‘rosettes’ for the pumps but as soon as the girls started dancing they just started pinging off. The judges started docking a point for each one that came off but stopped after 5!! We took the juniors rosettes off before they danced!! I thought it was because I hadn’t used a strong enough cotton to do the sewing and pull in the pleats so I sewed them again with extra strong thread but the same thing happened again. I have never put anything on the pumps since!!
With GMMDA some of the nerves had gone and the dinkies managed a second place with best leader, the tinies came 3 rd but juniors didn’t get placed.
